Root Canals
Root canal therapy, or "root canals," is performed to treat injuries or infections that affect the internal pulp and root of the tooth. Though many people fear root canals, the modern procedure is safe, painless, and effective. If you are experiencing persistent tooth pain, you may be in need of a root canal. Dr. Allen is qualified to perform most uncomplicated root canal procedures in-office.
To perform root canals, Dr. Allen first administers an anesthetic to ensure that the procedure is pain-free. Then he opens the tooth and gently removes the infected pulp within. Next, he fills the empty canal with an inert filler material to seal the root from re-infection. The last step of the procedure is to seal the opening, preventing future infections from developing inside the tooth.
Treatment for Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding, known as bruxism, may cause a variety of serious tooth and jaw conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorder, headaches, and lasting tooth damage. For most people, teeth grinding occurs while sleeping; this makes it difficult to identify the condition directly. Worn, mishapen, or fractured teeth may indicate teeth grinding, as may overly sensitive teeth and jaw pain.
For many patients of our practice in Parker, Colorado, located near Highlands Ranch and Castle Rock, teeth grinding is linked to stress, and tension. It may also be the result of poorly aligned teeth. In children, it may be linked to teething or simply the normal growth of the jaw or teeth. Whatever the cause, it is a condition that should be treated as soon as possible to avoid tooth damage as well as undue wear and tear.
Teeth grinding treatment varies depending on the underlying cause of the problem. Patients whose teeth are poorly aligned may require orthodontic treatment to straighten the teeth. For those whose grinding is caused by stress, nightguard therapy may be the best solution. Many patients benefit from mouth guards that protect the teeth during sleep. Whatever the cause of your grinding, we can help you identify it and suggest treatment to avoid long-term damage.
Dental Exams and Cleanings
Exams and cleanings are fundamental to good dental health. In general, most patients should have an exam and dental cleaning every six months. At our practice, we pride ourselves on offering checkups to all patients of all ages. Unlike most other dental practices, we schedule one-hour blocks of time for each patient to ensure that you get the individual attention you deserve.
Cavity Detection
Cavities, also known as dental caries, are the result of bacterial tooth decay that affects the hard tissues of the teeth. The earlier a cavity is detected, the less damage it can cause. For this reason, Dr. Allen relies on the DIAGNOdent® system for cavity detection. DIAGNOdent® is a light-based diagnostic system that makes it easier to identify cavities before they cause significant damage. Using this system, Dr. Allen can reliably identify cavities and treat them with tooth-colored fillings, inlays or onlays, or whatever other treatment is appropriate.
Oral Cancer Screenings
More than 30,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Tragically, more than 40 percent of those diagnosed die within five years due to late diagnosis. To help identify oral cancer in its earliest stages, Dr. Allen uses the ViziLite® Plus diagnostic system. As part of an annual dental exam, ViziLite® can safely and conveniently help identify oral cancer when it is most easily treatable. ViziLite® gives you the best chance of success in the fight against oral cancer.
Periodontal Care
Periodontitis is a term that describes a number of inflammatory conditions affecting the soft tissues that surround and support the teeth, ultimately causing tooth loss. It is caused by bacteria and tartar that accumulate between the teeth and gums, most often due to poor dental hygiene.
Conscientious dental hygiene is the best way to prevent periodontitis from occurring. Twice-daily brushing and daily flossing, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent periodontitis. At Rodney Allen D.D.S., P.C., we will help you establish a hygiene and treatment regimen that will help you to avoid tooth loss and other serious complications associated with periodontitis.
Sealants
Dental sealants are an easy way to help prevent tooth decay before it occurs. These safe plastic resin coatings are applied to depressions and chewing surfaces in the back teeth to protect teeth from damage caused by wear and tear, plaque, and food decay. Many people think sealants are only for children and adolescents, but adults can also benefit from sealant treatment. Each treatment is quick and convenient, and the benefits last for several years.
Oral Surgery
In an effort to provide as many options to our patients as possible, we maintain on-site surgical facilities. In this way, we can provide a variety of surgical treatments in our own office, eliminating the need for patients to visit multiple locations for the treatments they need. Providing these surgical options helps us fulfill our promise to offer full-service treatment for your entire family under one roof.
